Calgary Crime Map Update: New Insights and Ongoing Developments

Hey everyone, I’ve got an exciting update to share about our Calgary crime report. We’ve just added a new Crime Map page, and I wanted to walk you through some interesting findings and changes we’ve made.

What’s New: The Crime Map

Our latest addition is a detailed Crime Map that visualizes crime hotspots across Calgary. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The map uses dots of varying sizes and color intensities to show crime concentrations.
  • Larger dots mean more incidents in that area.
  • Darker red shades indicate higher crime density.

Surprising Insights

One thing that’s caught my attention is how some areas with high population density (from my personal knowledge of the area) are showing lower crime rates for certain types of offenses. It’s a reminder that the relationship between population and crime isn’t always straightforward.

A Note on Crime Rates and Data

Here’s where things get a bit tricky. Calgary has been growing at an incredible pace, which is great for our city but challenging for data analysis. Because of this rapid growth, I’ve made the decision to temporarily remove crime rates and rankings from this year’s report.

Why? Well, the population data we have is frankly outdated, and using it would give us inaccurate crime rates. I’m hoping to get my hands on updated community census and population data soon. Once we have that, we’ll be able to add back the crime rates and rankings, giving us a more accurate picture of crime in relation to our growing population.

What’s Next?

  • I’m actively seeking updated population data to bring back crime rates and rankings.
  • We’ll continue to update the Crime Map monthly with the latest data from the Calgary Police Service.
  • I’m always looking for ways to make this information more useful and accessible, so your feedback is welcome!

Using the Crime Map

  1. Use the ‘Sector’ and ‘Category’ filters to focus on specific areas or types of crime.
  2. Click on hotspots for detailed incident information.
  3. Check the ‘2023 vs 2022 Rates of Change’ for overall crime trends.

Remember, while this data is informative, it’s based on reported incidents and may not capture every crime. For the most current and detailed information, always refer to the official Calgary Police Service website or contact local law enforcement.

Stay safe, Calgary, and keep an eye out for more updates as we continue to improve our crime reporting tools!
